International Map Year – an event that is celebrated
worldwide to celebrate the special place of maps in our society. The launch of
the International year of cards, which will last until the end of 2016, took
place at the conference of the International cartographic Association (ICA) in
Rio de Janeiro in August 2015.
In the frame of the International Map Year
celebrations, Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK)
Extraterrestrial Laboratory (MExLab) organized three
cartographic exhibitions, where maps as results of the research of various
celestial bodies produced by MExLab under support of the Russian Science Foundation
(RSF) on the topic of "Research of fundamental geodetic
parameters and relief of planets and satellites" (project №
14-22-00197). On this exhibitions demonstrated maps as results
of the research of various Solar system's celestial bodies produced by MExLab:
- Hypsometric map of the Moon.
- Hypsometric globe of Mercury.
- Map of relief roughness of Mercury and the Moon.
- The Phobos atlas and Phobos wall map.
- Maps of Lunokhod-1 and -2 routes.
The first of the Planetary Maps Exhibitions
was organized on September 24-25, 2015 in Berlin at ISPRS Working Group IV/8 "Planetary Mapping and
Spatial Databases" meeting. The Working Group focuses on the
development of advanced techniques in data acquisition, processing, and
analysis pertaining to the mapping of planetary bodies.
Planetary Maps Exhibition was held in frame of Sixth Moscow Solar
System Symposium (6M-S3) at Space
Research Institute (IKI) on October 5-9, 2015. Solar System
Symposium is one of the main international events in Russia on space research.
Subject matter of the 6M-S3 covers various scientific problems with a central
topic "Moon and Mars exploration", including future Russian missions
to the Moon ("Luna-Glob" and "Luna-Resource") as well as
international mission "EXOMARS", the project that is developing now
in cooperation with ROSCOSMOS (Russian Space Agency) and ESA (European Space
The third Planetary Maps
Exhibition timed to the 45th anniversary of the first Mobile laboratory on the
Moon: "Lunokhod-1". The exhibition took place on 10 November
2015 in Star city in frame of the XI International Scientific and Practical Conference
"Manned Space Flights". A special place at the exhibition
is paid to detailed maps of the moon on the routes of the Soviet Rovers,
controlled remotely from Earth.
Planetary maps published by MIIGAiK in support
of the RSF,
were presented to the
participants of scientific conferences!
